Collaborative Research Program

Under this program, joint research with external institutions is carried out on an equal level. The external institutions may be industry, company, university laboratory, research institution, etc. and joint research may be conducted at either Electrochemical Engineering lab. or the external institution, or both. You can contact us to discuss details of collaborations: expected research outcomes, period, funds, and plans. Below are some examples of research collaborations we have been doing.

PT. Pertamina (Persero)

In cooperation with PT. Pertamina (Persero), we have been developing Al-air batteries for electrical vehicles. This project is funded by Matching Fund Kedaireka, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (2023). Now, this project is fully funded by PT. Pertamina to develop more reliable and high discharge capacity of Al-air battery. Find more about the project here.

PT. PLN (Persero)

In cooperation with PT. PLN (Persero), we are developing seawater batteries using the concept of metal-air battery to accelerate the electrification of off-grid regions in Indonesia. Find more about the project here.

National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST)

In this joint research, we work on electrocatalyst for oxygen reaction reduction (ORR) by compositing biomass-based N-doped carbon aerogel and MOF. The catalyst is developed to support the development of metal-air batteries to improve their performance. The lead of collaborators from NTUST is by Prof. Min-Hsin Yeh. Here are the joint publications published by the collaboration: Chem Eng J (2023) 146754.

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT)

In this joint research, we work on the fabrication of nanoparticle for use in various applications such as electrocatalyst for water splitting and metal-air batteries, and so on. The lead of collaborators from TUAT is Prof. Wuled Lenggoro. Here are the joint publications published by the collaboration: Chem Eng Sci (2019) 112; J Nanopart Res (2012) 807.

Nanyang Technological University

Under the project of Indonesia-NTU Singapore Institute of Research for Sustainability and Innovation (INSPIRASI) funded by LPDP, we are developing and scaling up electrochemical reactor to convert CO2 into valuable chemicals such as formic acid, CO or methanol. This project is also supported by PT. Pertamina (Persero) as part of their project for clean and renewable energy.

PT. Gunung Bale

In this joint research, we jointly developed a process to manufacture silica powder with specific properties for specialty products from pyrophillite mineral (Al2O3.4SiO2.H2O). The research activity was conducted at our lab, and we periodically report the results to the company. The company fully provided the research fund.

PT. Trans Jawa Sulawesi

We conduct joint research with the company on the development of advanced materials for specific applications from mineral resources, specifically magnesium. The research activity was conducted at our laboratory, and we periodically report the research results to the company. The company fully funded the research.

Consultative Works

We can provide consultation services based on our expertise for the company as part of the industry/company project, e.g., analysis of chemical process industries using sophisticated software such as Aspen Hysys, Ansys Fluent, Excel-based, etc. We also can provide basic engineering design and feasibility study for chemical industries. Below are some examples of consultative works we have been doing.

PT. Pertamina (Persero)

Penyusunan Basic Engineering Design (BED) Dan Kajian Keekonomian Proyek Percontohan Stasiun Pengisian Bahan Bakar Hidrogen Hijau Di Fasilitas Laboratorium Daan Mogot Pertamina

PT. Petrokimia Kayaku

Rancang bangun pabrik surfaktan (cocamidopropyl amine betaine dan C10-guerbet alcohol with 8 EO) dengan bahan baku dalam negeri (PT. Petrokimia Kayaku) – Basic design of surfactant (cocamidopropyl amine betaine and C10-guerbet alcohol with 8 EO) plants using raw domestic materials (PT. Petrokimia Kayaku)

Perum Perhutani

We conduct a project on basic Engineering Design of Sago starch plant in Kais District, Sorong Selatan Regency, Papua Barat Province for Perum Perhutani. The design was used as the bidding documents for EPC company who wished to build the plant.

Total E&P Indonesie

In this project, we assisted the company to find out and solve the problem encountered in the fiscal gas metering system for five natural gas fields in Kalimantan Timur. We studied Geometrical effect to gas measurements on fiscal gas metering system to find out why the results of measurement was different when using a certain configuration. We simulated the flow using CFD and successfully pointed out the root cause of the differences and recommended solutions.
(In collaboration with Mechanical Fluids and Mixing Lab., Dept. Chemical Engineering ITS)

PT. Petrokimia Gresik

We assisted the company to evaluate the problem encountered in the air preheater. The problem was the temperature of exhaust gas out of the preheater suddenly increased significantly. The exhaust gas was the combustion gas used to heat the primary reformer to produce syngas from natural gas utilized in convection region to recover the heat.

PT. Kaltim Daya Mandiri

We performed an evaluation on the root-cause of the sudden drop performance of the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) in a gas turbine combined cycle power plant. Based on the evaluation, we provided some recommendations to improve the performance of the HRSG power plant.
(In collaboration with Mechanical Fluids and Mixing Lab., Dept. Chemical Engineering ITS)

PT. Pertamina (Persero)

In this project, we performed a process simulation on the CDU and HVU unit to evaluate the conditions to obtain the desired products.
(in collaboration with other labs in Dept. Chemical Engineering ITS)
